This park is very special because it helps to protect many animals, birds, and plants. Manas became a national park in 1990. Even before that, in 1988, UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site, granting it special status for its importance as a cultural and natural place. Manas got this title because it has rare animals and great natural beauty.

This national park was the first park in Assam to become a tiger reserve. It was made a tiger reserve in 1973 as part of Project Tiger, which works to protect tigers that are present in India. Manas was the fifth tiger reserve in India. In 1989, it was also named a Biosphere Reserve. This means it is important for nature and the environment. Later in 2003, it became an Elephant Reserve too. These titles show that the park is very important for saving wild animals and nature.

Types of Safari

There are two main types of Safari in Manas Park. These safaris help visitors see animals, plants, and nature in the park.

( 1. Gypsy Safari )

This is the most common safari. You will travel in a small vehicle called a gypsy. Riding in a gypsy can bring you close to the park’s plants and animals. It is a nice way to enjoy the quiet and beauty of Manas. One gypsy can hold 5 adults and 1 child under 4 years old. The gypsy safari is available in the morning from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM or from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. In the afternoon, it runs from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The safari moves through two areas called Bansbari and Bhuyanpara zones.

( 2. Elephant Safari )

This safari is another kind of safari in Manas Park since you are riding on the back of an elephant. From this height, you can see animals and trees better. The elephant can also go to places where the gypsy cannot go. Only 3 people can ride one elephant at the same time. Elephant safaris are only in the morning, from 6:00 AM to 7:00 AM or from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM. This safari is only in the Bansbari zone.

Both safaris let you enjoy Manas National Park in different ways. You can pick the one you like best. Remember to book your safari early to have a good visit.

Zones in Manas National Park

Manas National Park is a big wildlife park in India with three main areas or zones for people to visit. These zones are called:

  1. Bansbari Zone – Central Zone
  2. Bhuyanpara Zone – Eastern Zone
  3. Panbari Zone – Western Zone

Each zone has different types of land, trees, and animals. But not all zones are open for tourists. Only the Bhuyanpara Zone and the Bansbari Zone are accessible to tourists. The Panbari Zone is closed to tourists. Let us look at each zone one by one.

Bansbari Zone (Central Zone)

Bansbari Zone is the most important and most visited zone of Manas Park. It is located in the middle part of the park, so it is also called the Central Zone. This zone has both grasslands and forests. There are many varieties of animals living in this region. Tourists can enjoy gypsy safari and elephant safari in this zone. These safaris help visitors see wild animals from a close distance. In this zone, people may see animals like the Indian rhinoceros, wild buffalo, and different kinds of deer. As compared to the Bhuyanpara Zone, the Bansbari Zone is slightly less crowded. That is why it is a good choice for people who want to enjoy the safari in peace and spend time in nature. If someone wants to see animals in a calm and quiet environment, then Bansbari is a good option.

Bhuyanpara Zone (Eastern Zone)

Bhuyanpara Zone is located on the eastern side of Manas National Park. This zone is also open for tourists. It is close to the entry gate of the park, so people can reach here easily. This zone has open grasslands, thick forests, and the Manas River flowing nearby. In this zone, tourists can do gypsy safari only. An elephant safari is not available here. This area is known as a very good place to see wildlife. Many animals and birds live in this zone. Visitors may see elephants, Indian bison (also called gaur), tigers, and many types of birds. Bhuyanpara is usually very active, which means there are many chances of seeing animals here. People visiting this zone get to enjoy a mix of nature, forests, rivers, and wildlife. It is a good place for those who want to see different types of natural views and animals in one safari.

Panbari Zone (Western Zone)

You can find the Panbari Zone on this park’s western side. This zone is not open for tourists. People are not allowed to visit this area. The main purpose of this zone is to protect the forest and animals. That is why it is closed to the public. This area has thick forests and hilly land. Some rare and endangered animals live here. These include animals like the golden langur, tiger, and leopard. Even though visitors cannot enter this zone, Panbari is still a very important part of Manas National Park. The goal of this area is to keep nature and wildlife safe and protected.
